Bold New Welsh Opera Film to premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival

Severn Screen is proud to be part of Tanau’r Lloer / Fires of the Moon—a groundbreaking Welsh-language opera film set to premiere at the prestigious 78th Edinburgh International Film Festival on 18 August 2025, ahead of a UK cinema release this autumn.

Commissioned by S4C and Channel 4Tanau’r Lloer is a striking fusion of opera and cinema. Inspired by moments from Caradog Prichard’s modern classic novel Un Nos Ola Leuad, the film is not a direct adaptation but a bold reimagining, deeply rooted in the haunting, slate-quarrying landscapes of North Wales—now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Directed by Chris Forster with a screenplay by award-winning filmmaker Marc Evans, the film is co-produced by AfantiOPRA Cymru, and Severn Screen, with Kirsten Stoddart producing. The richly atmospheric score, composed by Gareth Glyn, is brought to life by the Welsh National Opera Orchestra, alongside a powerful libretto from Iwan Teifion Davies and Patrick Young.
